With changeable weather, as a beginner you can expect an average harvest of 2 kg per m² of growing area per year.

Supply calculation

With average consumption, you need 160 kg per year per person. For a vegan, you can expect double the requirement. We calculate with 160 kg per person.

The calculations made here are for illustration and are probably far below the actual figures.

Pesticides and herbicides: The list of possible hazards is long - from acute and chronic skin diseases to symptoms of poisoning from direct contact, cancer, fertility and genetic damage, and malformations in newborns. Overall, pesticides are considered among the most dangerous environmental toxins in the world.

Calculation of spray solution usage

In Germany, 9 kg of plant protection products per hectare per year were used in 2020. A 250-liter per-hectare spray solution can already be produced (depending on the product) with 20 grams of plant protection products (highly toxic pesticides/herbicides). For simplicity, we therefore use the spray solution for the calculation. Glyphosate-containing plant protection products may be applied twice per year. On average, spraying is done two to four times (much more is also possible, depending on crop, conditions, and farmer). We assume three passes with 25 ml per m² each: your growing area (in m²) * 75 ml

Occasionally, plant protection products are also used in organic farming – but only those whose active ingredients are on the EU positive list for organic farming.

Calculation of the CO2 amount in kg

Agriculture in Germany contributes significantly to the emission of climate-damaging gases. The main causes are methane emissions from livestock farming (fermentation and manure management of slurry and solid manure) and nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils as a result of nitrogen fertilization (mineral and organic). According to an estimate, German agriculture was responsible for a total of 55.5 million tons of CO₂ in 2022. In 2020, agricultural land in Germany was around 11.5 million hectares. This results in a CO₂ output of 4.83 tons per hectare or 483 g per m² for our calculation.
