When the nights get cooler than ten degrees, you will lose your last harvest on the bush.

In short

Harvest every fruit at full size and with initial color tones before the frost hits. Place them individually on a warm windowsill, because in the refrigerator the sweet pepper loses its aroma and its vitamins.

Several ripe red and orange bell peppers hang on a green bush in the garden.

Save sweet pepper

Harvest your last sweet pepper before the first frost night. When nights become cooler than about ten degrees, the plant stops breaking down its green and stays stubbornly green until the frost gets it. You lose every fruit with the plant if you wait in vain for the red color on the bush in September. Its internal engine, the ripening gas, only runs in warmth and drives ripening further even without a bush at eighteen to twenty-two degrees. Red and green are actually one and the same fruit, with the red one simply having been allowed to ripen longer and therefore being sweeter. Therefore, pick every fruit that has already reached its full size and shows initial color tones before the frost hits. Place them individually on a windowsill in a warm room. If you lock them in the refrigerator instead, the sweet pepper loses its aroma and vitamins as punishment. Completely green, small fruits no longer ripen, which is why it is best to eat them immediately. A red fruit contains around 140 milligrams of Vitamin C per 100 grams, which is more than an adult needs per day.
